A panhandle pontoon is two hours and the price of a lunch. A Lowcountry creek boat runs on the tide and stays flat. Hawaii is a half-day offshore with a snorkel stop and a bill to match. Same animal, three completely different days out.
Destin, Panama City and the sugar-sand pass
The bottlenose here follow the shrimp boats into Destin Pass and work it all afternoon. Boats are pontoons and small catamarans, the water is waist-warm, and half of them stop at Shell Island so the children can get out.
Hilton Head, Savannah and the tidal creeks
Behind the barrier islands the water is brown, sheltered and full of fish, which is why the resident groups never leave. Some of these boats still see strand feeding, where dolphins push mullet clean out onto a mud bank.
Spinner pods off Oahu and the Kona coast
Hawaiian spinners rest in the sandy bays through the morning, which is exactly when the boats want to be there, so federal rules now keep swimmers 50 yards off. The good operators say so in the brochure and take you snorkelling on a reef instead.

What an hour with wild dolphins actually costs.

A big catamaran is shaded, steady and slow, and it will not follow a fast-moving pod. A rib gets there first and soaks you doing it. A kayak puts your eyes eighteen inches above the water. If you are prone to seasickness the answer is a catamaran and a morning slot, every time.
Dolphin House is a reef, not a building.
Sha’ab El Erg, an hour north of Hurghada, is a horseshoe of coral where a spinner pod comes in to rest through the middle of the day. Boats moor on the outside of the horseshoe and you snorkel in. The pod leaves when it wants to, which is the whole point and the reason nobody can promise you anything.

Algarve boats run west out of Albufeira and Lagos and take the Benagil sea caves on the same two hours as the common dolphins, which is why that trip outsells everything else on this coast. Madeira and the Azores are deep water and bigger animals. The Sado estuary at Setúbal holds a resident bottlenose group you can watch from the beach at Tróia.

Wild or captive, and what a sighting guarantee is really worth.
A wild trip cannot promise you a dolphin, so nearly every “guarantee” on the market means a free second sailing, not your money back. A marine park can promise one, because the dolphin cannot leave. Both kinds are on this site and both are named for what they are. Beyond that: morning water is flatter and the pods are more active, small boats get closer, and a crew that cuts the engine and lets the animals approach will show you more than one that chases.

Spinner dolphins hunt offshore all night and come inside the reef at first light to sleep, half a brain at a time, circling slowly in the shallow lagoon. Egyptian boats reach the horseshoe around nine. The rule that matters is the mooring: crews tie up outside and swimmers stay on the rim, because a pod woken repeatedly simply stops using the reef.

The Mnemba channel
